Returning after illness — what to decide before the first interview
A health-related break is private. German employers may ask about fitness for a specific role, but you still choose how much medical detail enters the room. Before the first interview, settle three practical questions for yourself so you are not inventing boundaries under pressure.
1. What hours and load can you sustain?
Write down a weekly maximum and any hard stops (treatments, rest windows, commute limits). You do not have to disclose the diagnosis to protect those limits; you do need a clear answer when asked about Vollzeit, Teilzeit, or Schichtarbeit.
2. What will you say about the gap?
A short, consistent phrase works better than improvisation: you stepped away for health reasons, you have medical clearance to return, and you are ready for the duties listed. If a panel presses for detail, you can decline politely and restate readiness for the role.
3. Which roles match your energy now?
Applying to the same seniority and travel load as before the break is not always realistic in the first six months back. Mapping two role tiers — a stretch target and a sustainable bridge role — reduces interview panic when a posting looks exciting but costly.
